  1. A person whose kidneys have failed (you can live normally on one kidney) will go
  2. on dialysis. The dialysis machine does the job of the kidneys: filtering the blood,
  3. removing the waste products and ensuring the blood has the correct balance of
  4. water, glucose and salts. The patient usually has dialysis twice a week, each
  5. session lasting ten hours. If a suitable kidney is found it can be transplanted,
  6. allowing the patient to return to a normal life.
